A Hero’s Blog Hop

When it comes to romance, the best part of the book—for me—is the hero. Whether I’m reading about risk-taking cowboys or sexy urban werewolves (or, in some cases, werewolf cowboys!) how the hero’s portrayed is the reason I read the genre. Maybe part of it’s the fact that romance heroes tend to be larger than life, in a way. Maybe it’s the fact that romances (typically) end with a Happily Ever After (or at least a Happy For Now) for the couple in the book and I like that. I can curl up with a romance and be entertained for hours.

What I like about heroes differs from book to book. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that I don’t always enjoy Alpha males—but I’ve read some that I have liked. It depends on how it’s written, how the character acts beyond his Alpha traits. I tend to like the more mysterious-yet-somewhat-sensitive hero. I’m currently reading the Sign of Seven trilogy by Nora Roberts (I’ve enjoyed almost everything I’ve read of hers, though I do have my favorites) and the hero Cal Hawkins in the first book, Blood Brothers, is a fairly good example. He’s gentle and sensitive at times, when he needs to be, yet he’s also strong and takes control of the situation after being dealt a hard hand.

Though probably my favorite heroes—so far, because I’m always reading and finding new loves—would be Hunter Brown in Second Nature by Nora Roberts, and Zeke Noble in Ava Gray’s paranormal romance, Skin Heat. Hunter is a horror writer (a plus in my book: I love characters who are writers!) who is mysterious, passionate, and secretive, yet for good reason. Zeke is both mysterious and wild-natured and protective of the woman he loves.

My paranormal m/m romance debut, Bonedust, happens to have two heroes: Gabriel and Urban. Quiet and a little cynical, Gabriel’s been in the slave ring since he was a child and, much to his dismay, has wound up with a sadistic vampire master who wishes to keep him…eternally. Urban, quirky and fun-loving, is a part-time exotic dancer, part-time bounty hunter with child support to pay. Thanks to his past, he’s not looking for a relationship, but when he meets Gabriel, he might just change his mind…

Unable to stake his cruel vampire master himself due to the bonedust inked into his skin, Gabriel Sharpe flees the Boneyard with one thing on his mind: find vampire hunter Dante. If he doesn’t kill Jeremie now, the vampire will find and Change him and Gabriel would rather die than be a slave for the rest of his immortal life.

Snake-shifter Urban Winters lives life by the experience; a part-time bounty hunter to pay child support, his true calling is exotic dancing. The minute he sees the scarred and beautiful Gabriel walk through the doors of his club, he wants him—and when Gabriel offers him a job as his bodyguard, Urban jumps on it for a reason to spend time with the runaway slave. They fall into a searing relationship that leaves Urban breathless…and terrified of what the future may hold. Urban wants to be lovers; Gabriel wants a relationship.

Dante’s a part of Urban’s past that he’d rather not dredge up, but when Gabriel is stolen away from him, he’s the only man Urban trusts to take out the vampire, once and for all.

  4. I’m much like you – I’m rarely drawn to alphas unless they show some redeeming cracks in that armor .. humor and a sharp wit always get to me, as do those who are, against all fear, taking another risk with trust.

  5. I like my heroes Alpha, protective, loyal, sense of humor, damaged and redeemable!

  7. I like an alpha male with the ability to be vulnerable with the ones he loves. He needs to have a strength of character & honor. He should also have a sense of humor.

  14. I love the tortured/flawed hero. To take it a step further, I like it if the hero is physically flawed in some way as well. I love the tug on the heart strings when a heroine can break down the hero’s insecurities and fears.
